Davey Woodward - 6 Miles East Of Here 5 Miles North Of Nowhere

6 Miles East Of Here 5 Miles North Of Nowhere by Davey Woodward

Davey’s debut solo album comes out some three decades after he first entered the world of indie music with his band The Brilliant Corners and some 15 years after he formed The Experimental Pop Band. Although grounded in the world of indie pop his work reflects his diverse and eclectic tastes. This includes collaborations with odd German pop outfits Le Hammond Inferno and the Torpedo Boys.  Davey has also played bass for avant guard jazz group Spaceways and his songs have been covered by Pinkie, Soda Stream and Sophie Ellis Bextor. His work has been name checked by The Kaiser Chiefs, The Answering Machine and Irvine Welsh.  Davey’s music was a firm favourite of the late great John Peel and  is championed by 6 Music. Cherry Red Records have reflected the growing interest in Davey’s work by reissuing a CD of The Brilliant Corners early work in 2009 and a further compilation is scheduled for release later in 2010. ‘6 miles east of here 5 miles north of nowhere’ finds Davey in a reflective mood, mixing suburban downbeat imagery with tales of dysfunctional relationships. Here is a place where dreams and disappointment exist in equal amounts. Sometimes the songs are sad sometimes funny, sometimes impenetrable.  Davey’s often wry observations of life are punctuated with songs that sound personal and heartfelt.  Jim Barr of The Blessing produced the record and collaborated on some of the songs, adding lush arrangements to accompany Davey’s voice and guitar. Nearly all the songs were recorded in live takes. Which gives the album a raw intimacy; the mood might make it sit in a folk Americana setting, it’s certainly a departure from Davey’s more immediate indie pop sensibility.  The album is full of surprises that keeps it out of any hackneyed ‘ singer songwriter ‘ territory. Quite simply its one of those albums that gets better with every listen. This year Davey has been playing his first solo gigs either on his own with an acoustic guitar or backed by drummer James lynch. He will be playing the Cube Cinema in Bristol on the 21st September. This follows appearances at the Local in London and WOMAD. Airplay is expected on BBC 6 Music, Gideon Coe and Steve Lamacq  have  been long standing fans of his music. Reviews to run in Mojo and Uncut with more to follow.
