Medicine Show # 9 : Channel 85 Presents Nittyville (Season One) by Madlib

Dunno what happened with Medicine Show #9 but I feel like I've gone back in time!! It wasn't so long ago I was enjoying 'Medicine Show #11: Low Budget Hi-Fi Music' and wondering what happened to #10 ('Black Soul') and the much anticipated #9 which promised at least four sides of pure block rocking, blunt smoking jams. Well, here it is and it's been worth the little wait. 'Channel 85 Presents Nittyville, Season 1' hangs its concepts on a fictional TV show hosted by a good friends Frank (Detroit's Frank Nitty of Frank-n-Dank fame), MED, Oh No, Madlib, and a supporting cast of extras. Madlib's rocking the beats with Nitty taking on the majority of the mic duties (with occasional assistance from the lads) to present ten sweet tracks interspersed with the usual cheeky skits and musical soundbites, etc. Totally awesome sounding record from what I've had time to listen to (it's a big one this) and a welcome return to the straight up rap record format for Madlib. This, originally double, LP also comes with a bonus 12" of cuts that I've clearly (someone give me a fucking break here) not got the time to check out but which will inevitably be chocka with sweet beats and laid back rhymes that should see you right for the rest of summer. Always a pleasure to hear, these Medicine Show LPs go from strength to strength. Up there with the recent Big Boi offering and the best of pretension free underground hip-hop. The screen prints are particularly good for this one. Make time for real rap yo!

Having postponed at the last minute the originally-planned September 2010 release of the ninth episode of his Medicine Show series, Madlib went back into the studio and is now ready to pull the trigger on a completely overhauled version. ‘… Nittyville (Season One)’ is perhaps the most traditional outing of the whole series : one MC, one producer, and a rap record all about stunts, blunts and hip hop. The MC named Frank is Detroit's Frank Nitt, protegee of the late J Dilla, formerly of Frank-n-Dank. Madlib is the Beat Konducta. As for Channel 85, it's clearly off most dials. This album’s concept TV station runs one show only, the comic-drama, reality-musical called ‘Nittyville’, featuring Frank, MED, Oh No, Madlib, and a supporting cast of extras. 14 tracks across 43 minutes, including 10 rap tracks, and four interludes.
