More blooming comebacks. This is ridiculous. What have I done? Am I THAT old that i've been relegated to "Dinosaur Alley"? Well never mind because it's the "MILF & the pervy vicar roadshow" AKA the welcome return of shambling Scots legends The Vaselines. I'm even starting to get my head round the (somehow addictive) Misty's Big Adventure style sing-a-long of the title track. They're not quite as lo-fi, wonky and semi-inept anymore. I think they've learnt how to play properly & use a studio to more of its capacity. Veering from the muscular opening tune to the spindly, brooding 'The Devil Inside Me', these songs are craftily constructed for maximum "earworm" potential. Hazy guitars, sexy 'n' wistful M/F vocals, rattly drums. Coming from a period where there was possibly even more bands in thrall to the delights of Lee & Nancy ('Turning it On' is one such hearty tribute!), these guys forged a sound alongside The Pastels which has become symbolic of Scottish alternative rock. Nods to 60s garage played in a true ramshackle & endearing fashion, kinda forming an inspirational template for 100s of indie bands over the years. There's many great songs on here, mingling with some not-so-great ones (the glam referencing 'Overweight But Over You' leaves me strangely irritated & underwhelmed) and some could even stand head 'n' shoulders with their "classics" (IE anything they did before they originally broke up) Hear where Sons & Daughters stole all their ideas from & understand why Uncle Kurt C was so enamored. Don't leave it 20 years next time you lazyheads. x
· Formed in Glasgow in 1987, The Vaselines released
two singles and one album and then split up in 1989
(the same week their album was released). They
might have faded into obscurity but for the
intervention of a certain band from Seattle.
· Nirvana covered three Vaselines songs, helping to fuel
a growing after-the-fact appreciation of their seedy,
two-and-a-half chord garage pop manifesto.
· ‘Sex With An X’ was recorded outside Manchester at
the Analogue Catalogue studio in Mossley with Julie
McLarnon engineering, and produced by Jamie
Watson (who also produced that first album Dum
Dum). The Vaselines ca. 2010 is Eugene and Frances
with guest musicians Stevie Jackson and Bob Kildea
from Belle & Sebastian on guitar and bass, and
Michael McGaughrin from the 1990s on drums.
