Rocketnumbernine - Matthew & Toby

Our single of the week (1st October 2010)

Matthew & Toby by Rocketnumbernine

5...according to our on Thu 30 Sep, 2010.

Don't really know much about these guys other than they toured with Kieran Hebden recently. It would appear that they are pretty pally because Hebden is the man who has committed this track to tape. He's seems very excited about that track in the press release and has invested alot of time in getting the recording just right, recording and mixing the entire thing in analogue...good lad. 'Matthew & Toby' is an excellent track. It sounds like just two guys (brothers i believe), one on drums the other on synths. The track is an epic twelve minutes long so, as you can imagine, it's a explorative track. It takes in elements of ambient techno, classic electronic, kosmische and krautrock to form a vast gelatinous dance prog work out. It's a fairly intense experience and I can see the appeal for Mr. Hebden. The Four Tet remix is a total treat and it's obvious he knows the strengths of the track. He builds a new sequence of sounds to get that head boucing before introducing the live elements of the original to create a euphoric and irresistible dance floor filler. I'm describing this 12" pretty badly (i'm tired and reviewed out) but I totally recommended it. Real nice tune.

* Kieran Hebden (Four Tet): "Rocketnumbernine toured the UK with me earlier this year and they were playing this track every night. Each night the performances were getting more and more intense and blowing mine and the crowds minds. By the end of the tour I knew we had to go into the studio and get a great recording made of Matthew and Toby. We recorded all analogue to get the sound right and if you buy this on vinyl you will have a recording that has never touched a computer, which I think is the way it needs to be done sometimes. I’ve done a remix for the b-side… more of a club version. I discovered Rocketnumbernine through Steve Reid who was great friends with the drummer from the band, Tom Page, and you can hear Steve’s influence and spirit in this music without doubt. Steve passed away just a couple of weeks before we made this recording and we have dedicated it to his memory. Rocketnumbernine will be touring with me in the UK again this November."

* Limited Pressing.
