I really dig these guys 'n' gals. They write an especially appealing style of hazy, laid-back indiepop that touches on classic psychedelia with these occasional odd little Canterbury folk leanings but in a sort of shambling inebriated lounge way like they've been getting pissed to loads of old Pastels records. Every bloody song they do just gently pulls you along by your shirt collar, then drags you slowly down a velvet lined alleyway, hot wine breath on neck, fumbly trousers, lots of quiet gasping, nervy breathlessness & excitement but you're also kind of stuck hypnotised in this beautiful limboland with guitars that sing like Maurice's from Felt - there's a sort of balmy NY summer pop vibe to parts of it too - cinematic and drowsy at other points - and you can't do anything but sigh with delight at the gentle seduction of it all instead of feeling hot, bothered & corrupted (which you should when songs get down 'n' dirty on yo' ass). The range of ideas & influences is astounding as there's a strong identity to this great Aussie band throughout. Looking forward to their difficult third now... Hahaha!

The follow-up to their sublime release on UK label Moteer, The Ancients’ ‘The Ancients 2′ is a bold declaration heralding their new found collectedness, The Ancients now being the combined powers of founder Jonathan Michell, Georgina Ward, Mark Rodda, and Raquel Sodier.

The Ancients of now are a humble cascade of guitar motifs, textural pools, and rhythmic delights.

“The Ancients 2 will be something between early Go-Between and non-rock Yo La Tengo, which obviously rules!!” - Rose Quartz blog
