Calories - Basic Nature

Basic Nature by Calories

Calories 2nd album combines strong melodic hooks with frenetic noise, recalling such underground titans as Hot Snakes, Cap ‘N’ Jazz & No Age. Quotes : “all urgent bolts of quirk filled yearning, executed with the sort of attention to crowd pleasing detail that sets the shit hot aside from the shit-on-your-boots.” NME //  "Calories are a new band on their first album, there’s experience here that goes far deeper than a ten-track indie-rock debut." Clash  //  "A collection of well-crafted, multi-faceted songs that owe a great deal to the works of ‘Speedo’ John Reis and his San Diegan Hot Snakes […] a full-fat, guilt-free musical experience."  Rock Sound  //  "Plenty of gang vocal sing-along parts and hooks large enough to hang a Great White on"  Drowned in Sound  // Following the release of the short sharp burst of their debut album Adventuring last year, Calories return with sophomore album Basic Nature, released on September 13th via Tough Love Records. A rich and varied record, Basic Nature sees Calories compliment strong melodic hooks with frenetic noise, recalling such underground titans as Hot Snakes, Cap ‘N’ Jazz and No Age. Their dedication to both craft and energy is a trait that has seen the band capture audiences around the UK, playing alongside The Thermals, Sky Larkin, Dananananaykroyd, Lovvers and Johnny Foreigner. Recorded "at various times in curious locations", Basic Nature points to a group that are continuing to build on the stirring indie-rock praised so highly on Adventuring. “Orchard Girls” harks back to Captain-era Idlewild, while the boisterous gang vocals and pop laden chorus of lead single “FFWD” instantly grabs at you. What’s more, the gentler moments in ''The Offer” and the soaring climax in “Habitations” indicate the strides forward that the band have undertaken on this record. Basic Nature will be released on September 13th as a combined vinyl and CD set, as well as download. “FFWD” will be released via digital download only on August 30th, accompanied by a video by acclaimed director Ollie Evans (Foals, Klaxons).
