Four way split activity from a fresh new label called Marshall Teller featuring more contemporary youth song stuff. These are some prize winning teenage jams if ever I heard them and further proof that indie rock is alive and well in 2010 UK. Cheatahs reveal a previously un-noticed space rock influence, albeit stripped down and played in a reasonably conventional indie rock way. Dignan Porch mumble their way through a perfect road movie jam with ease. Colours represent the pseudo-tropical corner with a lively sounding party jam that kinda reminds me of The soft Pack mixed with Fair Oh's. Not Cool (who also feature on that ace Italian Beach Babes/Paradise vendors comp I was blathering on about earlier) also hint at tropicalia in their pop format but then take things into new-wave, post-punk territory and totally rock the fuck out. All these bands are younger, cooler and better than you. Deal.
DIGNAN PORCH are brothers Sam and Joe Walsh and friends Hayley, Philippa and Ben pushing their humble Tascam 8-track to the very limit on this new recording entitled ‘Surge’. It’s a 1minute 30ish shot of dream pop consisting of the chords A minor and G. With debut album ‘Tendrils’ released on Captured Tracks having been widely praised for it’s songwriting craft amid fuzzy production, Dignan Porch are out to better themselves, already constructing their follow up LP for Captured
Tracks which will see them upping the FI somewhat with the emphasis remaining on churning out short surreal pop nuggets.
A great slice of slacker psych-pop, you can see why Captured Tracks asked to release their stuff pretty much as soon as they created a MySpace account. 8 / 10 –

COLOURS are four young men hailing from the bucket and spade seaside town of Bournemouth. Having upped sticks and settled in London, Colours have rooted themselves amongst a thriving DIY scene, playing shows for Upset the Rhythm, Home Under Ground and Sex is Disgusting, sharing the stage and making friends with both local based and international acts including Titus Andronicus, Clues, Real
Estate, and Crocodiles. Colours have popped one of there summer tunes on the split, entitled ‘Kick This’ it involves a spiraling feel good riff and woozy vocals invoking sunny vibes. The group’s debut single, “Desert Dessert”, was released earlier this year on London’s
Sleep All Day Records. Colours are jubilant, their songs are awash with life and sweep and swim through damaged harmonics - Upset the Rhythm
CHEATAHS is the bedroom side project of Nathan Ernest Hewitt from Canada, once solo, now a budding three-piece from London. Having played his debut show last year with WAVVES and released a limited edition debut 7” on Young And Lost Club as well as an EP cassette on Paradise Vendors Inc, Nathan has recruited James Wignal on guitar and Craig Bowers on drums. Since then, CHEATAHS have played
shows with Ariel Pink, Crocodiles, Best Coast, Dead Kids, Babyshambles, Ex Lovers,
Not Cool and Colours. On this track CHEATAHS get out of the bedroom and into the studio for the first time to record "Froshed," a 3 minute nod to adolescence and abandon, drenched in summertime nostalgia.
Sounds like a lo fi Elliott Smith skate boarding with Wavves. It’s totally amazing –Rough Trade
NOT COOL are a self proclaimed ‘gutter pop’ band born in the winter of 2008. Incorporating 2/3’s of the musical talent of the untimely area of London called Downham. Not Cool declare their intentions to blow up their home town in the as yet unheard 'Way South, South East.' With this curiously danceable explosion of 'gutter pop' you end up feeling glad they actually managed to leave the shithole before something bad happened. Not Cool released the sold out 7” single ‘Wonderful Beasts’ on Sleep All Day Records in September 2009. The song ‘Limbs are for Liars’ featured on the Paradise Vendors Inc/Italian Beach Boys Compilation alongside songs by Male Bonding, Spectrals, Fair Ohs, Mazes, Cold Pumas etc. They are releasing a 12” mini-album on Sleep All Day Records in August 2010. Not Cool have all the furious dementia of a teenage Future of the Left coupled with a deceptive ear for a melody, and that makes this London three-piece a force to be
reckoned with – This Is Fake DIY
