Our album of the week (6th August 2010)
...according to our Ant on Thu 05 Aug, 2010.
This has really hit the spot for me every time I've heard it. What this guy does is like the perfect marriage of tribal, ritualistic primitive music, then tops it off with space age psychedelic elements. I guess the sound is mostly loop based with tropical repetitive drums and celestial layerd synths. It really does transport me into the amazon where jungle leaves glow neon pink and tree frogs speak to me in high pitched voices. The repetition becomes incredibly hypnotic and layer upon layer is expertly built up until the tracks reach hugely dense psychedelic climaxes. This is super highly recommended as is everything I've heard by this mysterious artist. Trance inducing!
New album from mysterious amazonian French loop enthusiast High Wolf (Not Not Fun, Krayon, Group Tightener), known as the duo team IIbiis Rooge with Astral Social Club.
Comes in a beautiful gatefold oversized CD package, limited to 500 copies.
High Wolf makes music like no one else on the planet. He claims to befrom the Amazon and all his activities are shrouded in mystery.Sometimes he is just one man, other times High Wolf is a duo. In eithercase he conjours mystic tropical clouds of repetition and build that, while complex, are never hard to listen to. The music seems to tap intoa primal frequency and demands listeners to dance. A contemporary ofJames Ferraro (of The Skaters), Oneohtrix Point Never and Ducktails. He has records and tapes out on loads of ultra hip labels like Not NotFun (the people who put out records by Sun Araw, Magic Lantern,Pocahaunted), Krayon, his own Winged Sun. Also he's known as thenew superastral duo team IIbiis Rooge with the seminal talents of Mr.Neil Campbell, better known these days as Astral Social Club and (ex-)member of Vibracathedral Orchestra. The new album Shangri L.Afeatures the edited tracks from acclaimed cassette "Gabon" on WingedSun Records and 3 exclusive new tracks recorded during the spring of2010. These tracks has been remastered by the Japanese famousengineer Soichiro Nakamura (Guitar Wolf, Boris, Yura Yura Teikoku...).The album showed High Wolf looking at Africa from his native Amazonia...What's the difference between Amazonian and Africanjungles? When we live in the wild, with percussions and tribal singing,we're all the same...
Stay tuned for much more High Wolf, including a split 12" with ForestSwords on Brooklyn label Group Tightener (Best Coast, Alex Bleekeretc) and forthcoming shows. Japan tour (w/ Topping Bottoms )scheduled for Autumn 2010 and a limited LP will be pressed for thistour.
