Gnac w/ Alessandra Celletti - The Red Pages

The Red Pages by Gnac w/ Alessandra Celletti

4...according to our on Fri 17 Sep, 2010.

Now this isn't exactly Friday afternoon motivation music. For those fond of Yann Tiersen, Nils Frahm & Eluvium's earlier, sparser piano work comes this rather sumptuous & elegant 2 disc set. Alessandra Celletti is an Italian virtuoso pianist so expect much velvety tinkling of the ivories from that one & the other one, Marc Tramner. He adds occasional flourishes of "stratocaster" guitar. The quality of this collection is top drawer & of an extremely tender, occasionally jaunty (see Satie'esque) & evocative nature. The second CD features lots of home studio & demo versions from various sessions so it'll be interesting to contrast the rougher recordings with the finished, classy suite on disc one.

A collaborative project between the British multi-instrumentalist and composer, Mark Tranmer (gnac) and the Italian virtuoso pianist, Alessandra Celletti, the red pages was recorded live in the studio in Rome. Tranmer and Celletti met via myspace in late 2007 after hearing each other’s work. The 25- track album on cd 1 comprises eight main themes and variations. The album is predominantly piano-based – played by Celletti, with sporadic sprinklings of stratocaster by Tranmer. The main themes were written by Tranmer, and the variations by Tranmer and Celletti. Musically, the closest points of reference are the piano-based classical and soundtrack works of Michael Nyman, Phillip Glass, Wim Mertens, Sylvain Chauveau, and Ennio Morricone, as well as the piano-based work of post-rock collective Rachel’s. The second, bonus cd contains demos and alternative versions of tracks from the red pages, as well as ten new keyboard-based electronic pieces written and recorded solely as gnac. Mark Tranmer has previously recorded six albums as gnac, and written and produced the music for the Montgolfier Brothers, signed by Alan McGee as the first release on his poptones label. The Montgolfier Brothers and gnac have toured worldwide since 1997, most recently in Spain and Russia. Alessandra Celletti came to prominence in the Italian musical scene in 1994 with her self-produced album “Les sons et les parfums”, featuring compositions by Debussy, Ravel and Satie. Since then she has worked on a number of projects, including interpretations of the music of Philip Glass and Scott Joplin, as well as some departures from classical music, such as her vocal album ‘Way Out’. Alessandra studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome and, after graduating, went on to specialize in 19th – 20th Century French music. She has recently collaborated with Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia) on the album “Sustanza di Cose Sperata”. Her rendition of Erik Satie’s "First Gnossienne" was chosen by British director Guy Ritchie for the soundtrack to “Revolver” (2006). Alessandra frequently plays live in Italy, as well as in the US, and most recently at a jazz festival in Mozambique. gnac, with Alessandra Celletti on piano, will be playing live in Italy and elsewhere to promote the album release.
