Boris and Ian Astbury - BXI

BXI by Boris and Ian Astbury

Christ on a bike, I didn't think Ian Astbury could sink much lower than when I saw The Cult at the Leeds festival about nine or ten years ago (hilariously white trainers, giving shout-outs to "my man Eminem" and all) but the vocals on this are fucking PAINFUL. I guess you could see this as the natural culmination of Boris's recent hair metal lovin' period (although apparently more Astbury-fronted material is going to be forthcoming) and they play their part reasonably well, aping the guitar sound of 80s heavy rawk, even if it's incredibly cheesy at times. Wata definitely hasn't lost her ability pull a cracking solo out of the air at a millisecond's notice and they're generally the highlights of this twenty minute mini-album/EP things, along with her take on The Cult's 'Rain'. Still, I can't see why you'd choose to listen to this over 'The Witch' or one of Boris's many amazing back catalogue moments.

Southern Lord proudly announces an incredible collaboration between label artists Boris and Ian Astbury (The Cult andThe Doors).

* This finely-crafted four-song release, simply entitled BXI, was tracked and mixed in Tokyo in late April. Astbury's iconic rock vocals are a perfect match for Boris's straightforward, laid-back, but still raw and imaginative song writingconstructed for the mini album; another intriguing display within the band's ever-morphing, extensive resume of releases, tours and collaborations.

* BXI showcases the already unclassifiable rock of Boris in an entirely new light, and shows a new side to one of rockand roll's most notorious singers.

* The release features three new original tracks, as well as a cover of The Cult's song Rain, ethereally vocalised by Boris guitarist Wata.

* Art and design for the release was commissioned to Stephen O'Malley (Ideologic.org, SUNNO))), etc.). The result is stunning.

* Both Boris and Ian enjoyed working together so much that they have already planned to perform together on stage inthe coming months. There is already talks of a follow up to this amazing recording.

* FOR FANS OF: Boris, The Cult, Sunn0))), Melvins, Holy Barabrians.
