Our single of the week (22nd July 2010)
...according to our Brett on Thu 22 Jul, 2010.
You know I never even realised that the Dean in question here was Dean Wareham from Galaxie 500. That one somehow totally passed me by. Apparently these tunes were two of thirteen selected for use as mini-soundtracks to screen tests filmed by Andy Warhol for an exhibition last year which is pretty prestigious like. 'I'll Keep It With Mine' was the Bob Dylan cover used for Nico and it somehow manages to be both totally lush (with its string-heavy arrangement) yet really understated and intimate (a quality largely brought by Britta Phillips' stunning delivery). It kinda reminds me of something like God Help The Girl except vastly better. 'It Don't Rain in Beverly Hills' (for Edie Sedgwick) is completely different in terms of sound but equally as excellent with its dubby bassline, drum machine beat, spacey synth sounds and vocals from Dean. A genuine double A-side where both tracks are total and utter winners!
I’m sure you’ll not need me to tell you that Dean Wareham was once in Galaxie 500 and that Britta Phillips joined him later in Luna, you all know that stuff I’m sure. What you may not know is that at the behest of the Warhol Museum and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust last year, Dean and Britta were asked to create 13 pieces of music as a backdrop to 13 of Warhol’s legendary screen tests.
The choice of subjects was theirs, only the number was set. Believed to have been as many as 500 and all shot at the Factory, New York City, between 1964 and 1966, subjects were chosen by Warhol believing they had “star potential”. Regulars to the Factory such as Gerard Malanga, Lou, Ingrid Superstar, Edie Sedgwick and Nico as well as people like Dylan, Dennis Hopper, Yoko Ono, Donovan, Ginsberg and Dali all had the silent film treatment.
Dean and Britta’s task was to choose 13 which make up the gorgeous new album, “13 Most Beautiful” - from which these 2 tunes were taken. “I’ll Keep it with Mine” features an incredible Britta vocal and was chosen as Nico’s piece for the full length. “It Don’t Rain in Beverly Hills” as it’s double AA side was picked for Edie Sedgwick.
The single here is limited to 500 copies and has a hand numbered, booklet sleeve with glorious live shots of the band playing the tunes on the single to stunning backdrops of Nico and Edie. Copies are earmarked for the museum and the imminent tour. The band play London’s Barbican on July 30th. Be quick here, these’ll go in the blink of an eye…
