Apparently this little fella sold out almost instantly when it was originally released so those who've been trying to track a copy down have surely lucked out with this re-press. Apparently this is the work of an LA-based producer and I've got to say that he's definitely got his own particular take on hip-hop. I guess 'like a stripped-back Flying Lotus' would be about the best comparison I can think of as he seems to be equally in thrall to dubstep and Warp-style electronica (plus the general spacey feel and delicious crispness of his beats are very reminiscent) but there are plenty of moments that recall the likes of Plaid or (when the fizzing synth lines start flying about) many a recent Hyperdub release. Looking forward to hearing more from this chap in the near future as he seems to be a very promising talent..
When it was first released in September ’09, the debut full length album from electronic producer, Low End Theory resident spinner and all-round L.A. beat-scenester Nosaj Thing was an instant sell-out that only the most tuned-in listeners were swift enough to grap up.
Now coming back into circulation in a full scale repress, ‘Drift’ is a record that pits gritty electronics against sultry sun-drenched hip-hop undertones and spaced out beats, and is one no fan of modern dimensions in rhythm should leave out of their collection. One of L.A.'s finest musical modulators, Nosaj Thing has received accolades from XLR8R and Urb, and major airplay support from Pete Tong and Mary Anne Hobbs.
His electronic soundscapes and wild beat tectonics play like vignettes that affect the listener's mind as deeply as he hits their soul, akin to DJ Shadow getting nice with Boards of Canada.
