Aw man the Books are back! I got completely obsessed by The Books when Lost & Safe came out. I couldn't put their records down! 5 years later comes 'The Way Out' on their new home Temporary Residence! In that 5 years I got married and I'm gonna get divorced, I had a kid, I got gradually more stupid and the centre of me grew. A lot has happened! So what has happened in Books world? Possibly a lot but after a few listens to this new album it doesn't sound like a massive leap forward. I wouldn't really expect that. I'd expect it to sound like The Books who are apparently in a genre of their own. They make alien sounding pieces of music which don't really sound like anything else... There's maybe a bit of Laurie Anderson and Talking Heads in there. It's very New York sounding! I like the inventive use of samples and the weird noises and sounds they use to create these weird pop masterpieces. They're a band you just need to listen to and make your own mind up. You're either gonna find it genius or supremely annoying. Me?? I love it!
Hello, and welcome to a new beginning. So begins The Way Out, the fourth album by the Books, the first in five years from the celebrated Northeastern duo. With new homes both personally and professionally founders Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong have both settled in the mountains north of New York City to start families, and The Way Out marks their first release for Temporary Residence Limited this is indeed a new beginning. Over the course of three albums in nearly a decades time, the Books have grown to become one of modern musics most genuine innovators. Creatively complex and truly unclassifiable, The Way Out continues the Books tradition of meticulous, existential songcraft, infusing the playfully surreal elements of previous albums with a humorous, childlike excitement. Produced and recorded as always in the Books home studios, The Way Out expands on the charm and intimacy of past endeavors with a deeper emotional resonance and an ever-impressive marriage of seemingly disparate sound worlds. With The Way Out, the Books have mastered the precarious balance of beauty, absurdity and accessibility. And it feels so good, so relaxed, and so at ease, and youre becoming the world, and everyone in it. Highly anticipated new album, their first in five years. Recently featured on The Blind Side soundtrack. Total catalog sales over 50,000.. RIYL: Sufjan Stevens, Talking Heads, Bon Iver, Four Tet.
