TPC are Canada's answer to The Srokes. They have a sound that is upbeat and catchy. They also remind me also of a latterday Idlewild, with the pace and directness of their songs. TPCs latest album is full of neat hooks and subtle melodies that are quite delightful. The albums starts pretty strangely, with weird noises surrounding hushed vocals. Then the band ease in and you are well away. The playings sharp, the productions nice and dry, and the overall feel is one of upbeat but sad beauty. I think its a shade better than their last offering and they are surely ones to watch out for. A charming listen and a strong musical companion...Heel Boy!!
‘Champ’ is the second full length album from Canada’s Tokyo Police Club and, as its name suggests, it’s a triumph packed with taut, catchy anthems that display a renewed vigour and fizz.
· The follow up to 2007’s mini album ‘A Lesson In Crime’ and the 2008 full length debut ‘Elephant Shell’, ‘Champ’ was recorded in spring on 2010 in LA, with Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) on production duty.
· ‘Champ’ manages to encompass the compelling tautness and energy of ‘A Lesson In Crime’ with the sweet melodic introspection of ‘Elephant Shell’, ending up as Tokyo Police Club’s most fully realised work to date.
· Stand out songs include the electronic pop of ‘Bambi’, the curiously titled opening duo ‘Favourite Food’ and ‘Favourite Colour’ and the urgently anthemic ‘Wait Up (Boots Of Danger)’.
· Tokyo Police Club will be hitting UK shores this summer for a one off show at the Scala, and an appearance at Latitude Festival, but will be returning in the Autumn for a more extensive run of shows.
· Available on CD and limited edition gatefold vinyl (500 copies). The vinyl format also includes the album on CD.
· Exclusively for independent retailers, the first 500 orders of 5 copies or more of ‘Champ’ - on either format - will be accompanied by a free bonus CD (MI0157CDX) featuring Passion Pit and DOM remixes of ‘Wait Up (Boots Of Danger)’, a collaboration with Born Ruffians, and bonus track ‘Young Vincent Price’.
