The Cavalcade - I’m Like A Ship Trapped Inside A Bottle

I’m Like A Ship Trapped Inside A Bottle by The Cavalcade

Maybe its my general tiredness and apathy but I've yet to hear anything to really grab me today. Plenty of interesting diversions but nothing to make me fall off my chair in excitement.  This falls into the same category. Its mildly interesting indie pop with a sound hitting the exact mid point between early Field Mice and early Belle and Sebastien. The A-side chorus certainly has a lot of the Stuart Murdoch about it. Production wise its odd with ploddy drum machine and strange distorted guitar.  I'm more keen on the B-side 'Your Old Room' but possibly because this more than apes those early melancholic Field Mice recordings. I think they've used the same drum machine setting for both sides but there's lashings of trebly jangly guitar and maudlin vocals to more than make up for that. I like the fact that there seems to be not one but two chorus's. The jury is out on the theremin like synthesizer solo but I still like this tune a lot - see also Brighter or Bradford's finest The Apple Moths.

The Cavalcade are an Indie Pop duo from Preston, featuring Craig Phillips (Vocals/Guitar) and Stephen Birtchnell (Guitar / Keyboards / Bass). Their melancholic guitar pop is inspired by bands such as Felt, The Smiths and Belle & Sebastian. After forming in early 2009, the band released their debut EP, Meet You In The Rain, to an enthusiastic response from the indie-pop community. A single on the Miami-based label Cloudberry Records was soon followed by a limited edition EP for the German label Vollwert Records, before the band signed to Pebble Records at the end of the year. Their debut album Many Moons is set for release this summer, and continues the DIY ethic of their previous releases. I’m Like A Ship Trapped Inside A Bottle is the first single to be taken from that album, a driving whirlwind of guitars that evokes the restlessness of small town life. The band have announced a European tour to coincide with the album’s release and will be playing dates in France, Spain, Italy, Greece and Germany in September. For further details, check the band’s MySpace page where you can also watch a music video for the single. "A band that promises to become a well known name in indie-pop. This is jangly perfection, the kind where guitars gallop over romantic vocals" - The Cloudberry Bugle / "Meet You In The Rain is the best release of the year so far." - Jangle Pop Boutique / "Sometimes you hear a band and 'just know' within 2 seconds of listening. The Cavalcade are such a band." - Humans Beware / "Manchester and London may want a band like The Cavalcade, but there are towns and people who NEED them. The same way people need(ed) Felt or Belle & Sebastian or The Smiths." – Brill Dream /
