The Band Of Holy Joy have just released a new record on the Radio Joy label. The Band who formed in the eighties and were signed to Rough Trade have spent the last ten years writing and performing plays and running two radio shows, one on Resonance104.4FM and their own Radio Joy show. Paramour is their first since Love Never Fails (2002 Rough Trade) and the first of three planned. Pioneers of an Urban Folk sound the songs on this album veer more towards a dark New York art sound. The Band of Holy Joy’s music is based around Johny Brown’s bitter-sweet lyricism and Christopher Brierley’s soaring violin work. All the songs are underpinned by the complex and beautiful guitar work of Andy Astle. Gavin Martin gave the album four stars in Uncut and said that with it’s folk macabre meets William Burroughs/Lou Reed- like sagas of lust, desire and obsession it’s a singular but mighty album that should redirect attention the The Band Of Holy Joy’s fitful but illustrious canon. Press to run in The Quietus, NME, Rock N Reel Daily Mirror Uncut, Record Collector and many more. Advertising in Quietus, Uncut & Record Collector. Press quotes - “With its folk macabre meets William Burroughs/Lou Reed-like sagas of lust, desire and obsession it's a singular but mighty album that should redirect attention to The Band of Holy Joy's fitful but illustrious canon.”Gavin Martin, Uncut, June 2010 // “Musically, the group are in the classic "Big Music" zone - think Van Morrison c. "Veedon Fleece", the Triffids, Television - with a freedom to make sounds as big or small as they want, able to soar with beautiful violin textures one minute, or float on electro soundscape the next.Versatile guitarist Andy Astle seems able to play whatever's required (& then some) on each song, whether its a staccato riff or jangling fills.” Mudkiss //
