I've got a soft spot for Gold Panda's 'get a little of something from everywhere and see what happens' style. He seems to be very much from a hip-hop background as he makes great use of beat chopping and samples. On 'You' we hear these skills applied to the murky waters of indie dance sounding like many different things bringing to mind contemporaries like Memory Tapes and Debruit on first listen. 'Peaky Caps' sounds a alot like the new Four Tet stuff with it's super tight loops and cheeky percussive elements. The Seams mix provides ultra light touches with elements of synth pop and glitch combined together to create a hypnotic blend whilst the Osbourne mix brings soul and funky house into the equation yet still manages to be light, airy and peaceful in tone. Really like this one, good work lad.
Gold Panda’s journey has been a long and intermittently strange one. Initially, the Essex, UK artist spent his day-job time behind the counters of various houses of ill repute—adult bookstores, record shops—finding that the two were equally seedy. He spent the rest of his waking hours building up a library of original, dizzyingly eclectic electronic music incorporating a disparate mix of influences and source material. The results were gleaming instrumental hip-hop tracks saturated with bright colors and sublimely chopped-up vocal samples. Thus, Gold Panda was born.
Now Gold Panda is set to capitalise on an exciting and critically-hailed 2009 that saw him named as one of BBCs Sound of 2010 nominees, with the release of new material and shows in the UK, Europe, USA and Japan.
Gold Panda has remixed the likes of Little Boots, Telepathe, Bloc Party, Simian Mobile Disco, Health and The Field, before releasing three sold out EPs of his own material to huge critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, Dazed and Confused, The Guardian, NME and beyond.
