Kurt Vile's new EP pushes a withered foot down on the "Slacker" pedal and never lets up. This guy's coming straight from Philly with nothing more than a guitar, a really tight pair of pants (maybe not) and a head full of dreams. This gent is a great songmeister. His music is loose and kind of jam orientated with atmospheric, yet lo-fi production that sounds ace. Especially on tracks like "Slick Licks" which has a repetitive quality that really draws you in. He's been compared to such legends as Bob Seger and The Boss. I wouldn't fully agree with that, even though I can see it. I think he's more in the Neil Young sort of slacker camp. His drawl is all over this puppy and sounds ace!! There are six songs on this EP and all are touched by the floppy hand of slacker greatness. The sleeve's amazing too, a beguiling photo of Mr. Vile himself looking very, very moody.... A bit like Moody Voyeur (Rudi Voller).. A great EP that slackers everywhere should shuffle towards, nonchalantly....
Here’s the timeless record for 2009. Electric studio (mostly) recordings from Philadelphia’s Constant Hitmaker. New fans of his last CD will cry into their pillows and accuse him of selling out the bedroom rock scene. The initiated few will know he’s been doing it for years… plugging in with a full on rock band called the Violators and gigging in all corners of Philly. With baritone guitar/bassist Adam Granduciel, rodeo slide & fuzz guitar from Jesse Turbo, and perfect percussion from Mike Zeng, the Violators are Kurt’s Crazy Horse, slugging it out with him when he feels like playing with a full band. Oddly pleasant singing, in-the-red fingerpicking, twisting swells of feedback, totally POUNDING drums, and Krautlike-zen fill both sides of this record. Loud and proud, The Hunchback E.P. looks right filed next to your Neil, Suicide, and Spacemen 3 records.
