Now this is really a nice surprise. The 12" passed me by recently, most of Pritchard's stuff I lap up but the last couple of waxings for other labels were somewhat lacking in depth. Now a mini album from Steve Spacek & Mr. P is in my large mitts, I'm feeling some real deep, swirling spiritual electronica with nods to both modern dubstep & Juan Atkins. Then my face starts to shake from the juddering, fizzy Vex'd style grime of 'Lash Out' - an addictive tune topped with some stunning electro keys and gurgling synths. 'Boingy' is a playful digital dancehall stepper offering up floor punishing bass, itchy foot-moving beats and a remarkably spacious production. There is more of a rootsy vibe to the last three tracks on here which levels things off beautifully. The deep 'lovers dub' finale of 'Too Late' would slot nicely into a DJ set with a Tikiman or King Midas Sound track - warm soulful vocals & a heavyweight low end mix it with skittering widescreen percussive fills & some tasty horns, a fine conclusion to this highly atmospheric recording indeed!!
The next step in the evolution of Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek’s Africa Hitech – a limited edition special double vinyl juggernaut of bass music.
Africa Hitech is more than a name; it is an ideology - one that embodies its members passions for an eclectic diaspora of electronic styles, from dub and acid to UK garage, grime, techno, house and Jamaican dancehall.
Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek stand at the intersection of all these styles (and more) and the result is a bass-fuelled manifesto. Created at Red Bull Music Academy in 2007, Africa Hitech forms part of Mark Pritchard’s collective of projects – MPP Productions.
MPP is a banner under which all the wide-ranging productions from this prolific producer can co-exist and released through Warp it includes Africa Hitech, Harmonic 313, new Reload material, and others.
‘Hitecherous’ is a six track juggernaut of a mini album, following debut single ‘Blen’, and to be followed with further releases and DJ dates throughout this year before the album drops in early 2011.
Spanning a vast array of genres, yet never feeling like style tourism, the pedigree of these two renowned artists combines to create something startlingly fresh.
Limited to only 400 copies.
