The Wave Pictures i've got the oddest soft spot for considering two of them used to back Darren Hayman in Hefner - one of my least favourite bands EVER. I'm assuming David Tattersal is the singer, he has that strange, faintly jarring voice that stops a hairs breadth short of being grating. But he just has this fantastic knack of conveying the down-at-heel poetry of a sensitive soul, see, and the band back him steadfastly on this new EP with their tumbling, faintly ramshackle indie that sounds beautifully stripped-back & faintly dusty with a vintage rock twist. They're immensely popular these boys & I think this 6 tracker is gonna win them even more converts! I was reminded heavily of a certain band at one juncture but couldn't put my finger on it till Brett so on-the-ball retorted how Television-ey 'Cinnamon Baby' sounded! A real slicing guitar solo on that tune too - it fucking totally rocks, yes I am reviewing the same band.......I said slicing Phil........x
The Wave Pictures return after their recent collaboration with Stanley Brinks with a new EP, Sweetheart, out June 7th on Moshi Moshi Records.
After the richly observed and amusingly confessional lyrics of If You Leave It Alone, the Sweetheart EP renews their focus on storytelling with six songs of simple compositions and quirky, ramshackle charm
Intriguingly off-kilter yet instantly familiar, the title track blends hazy, lo-fi sounds that welcomingly contrasts the rich guitar tones and the earthy bliss of its lyrics.
Dave Tattersall’s trademark vocals are wrapped up in The Wave Pictures’ signature cosy crackle. The result is an EP that is wistful, bittersweet and catchy in all the right places.
