Richard Hawley - False Lights From The Land EP

False Lights From The Land EP by Richard Hawley

Now for something much better. First of all this EP just screams quality. Four songs, three previously unreleased on wonderful 10" vinyl and inside theres a CD version so you can shove it on your Itunes. The opener 'Remorse Code' is taken from his intermittently brilliant 'Trueloves Gutter' album and is a slow burning treat. The second track 'Shallow Brown' is a throwaway acapella number but the real joys come on the B side. 'The Ellan Vannin Tragedy' is a traditional sea shanty thing with lovely choraled vocals. Finally 'Theres a Storm A Comin' ' is a classic Hawley ballad. One for the mums as Brian said. Classic Hawley - what a winner!

On 7th June 2010, Richard Hawley releases a new EP False Lights From The Land on Mute. Comprised of four songs inspired by the ocean (a familiar theme in Hawley's songwriting), the EP will be available both as a download and as a 10” vinyl limited edition.
Inspired by Richard Hawley’s recent BBC Radio 2 series The Ocean (wherein he explored how the sea, seafaring culture and sea travel has shaped the music, art and literature of The British Isles), False Lights From The Land features two original Hawley compositions: the lead song, Remorse Code (taken from his critically acclaimed album Truelove's Gutter) and a previously unreleased song, The Storm.
Additionally, the EP offers two cover tunes: a haunting rendition of The Ellan Vannin Tragedy (written by Hughie Jones of English folk legends The Spinners), which tells the tale of a ship that sank in stormy weather off Liverpool Bay in 1909 killing all 36 aboard; and an a cappella performance of Shallow Brown, a pumping shanty of West Indian origin. Both covers feature guest vocal accompaniment by Smoke Fairies.
