This dude's in Cave who you probably like 'cos they do some good shit. This doesn't much resemble their krauty, minimalistic rock repeatsmithery but it's easy to come to the conclusion that it arrives at similar ends via completely different means - ie the Berlin School-inspired extended synthesiser workout. Both approaches invite the listener to zone out and this record is certainly being pretty successful at it so far.. I'm finding it far easier to let it tempt me into a Thousand Yard Stare out the window than to get some words down about it. Proof positive that he really knows what he's doing and fans of the New Wave of New Age (can I start that one off?) that's so popular at the moment will undoubtedly enjoy drifting around in his vintage analog sound pool.
Bitchin Bajas is the solo project of Cave's Cooper Crane. Cooper's skillful use of melody within his elastic electronic tones is matched by his ability to mix it all (much like he does with Cave) so that there's a lot of sound but even more space and separation between the sounds. Tones & Zones was pressed in an edition of 500 copies. Through some sort of cosmic serendipity Important is releasing Tones & Zones at the same time as J.D. Emmanuel's classic Wizards LP from 1981. There are some interesting parallels between Tones & Zones and Wizards. Both artists have a firm grasp of sound without wading too deeply into the blissful waters of New Age melody. Both used an organ and a similar assortment of analog synths and both used the same Tascam reel to reel tape machine for their recordings. Though nearly 30 years separate them they're both generously offering you the opportunity to dive deeply into their own private tones & zones. Enjoy. "Tones and Zones' is not only the title but also a goal for Bitchin Bajas to achieve higher being through meditative music. Dreamscapes come to life and structure happens only when a zone is discovered within. Tones help find your zone when low and hi frequencies create different feelings and thoughts. Once the thoughts are there and the tones are pulsing, your zone will occur. " Cooper Crane
