This is the one I have to be nice to right? The Pains of Being Pure at Heart astonish me. They leave me gasping for air with their phenomenal success story. The against all odds story of a band making it to the top despite being handicapped by not having one single original musical idea of their own. The A side is jangly indie pop with polished production, kind of like the Razorcuts or Brighter as produced by Ian Broudie. The B side manages to be somehow even more fey. Both A and B side are notable for the listener being unable to remember any kind of tune having happened even as the needle is still on the run out groove.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are a New York four-piece who play genius noisy pop songs with boy/girl vocals, blissful melodies, fuzz guitar and blistering drums. Tipped as one of five to watch in 2009 by Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber on ABC news, they released their self-titled debut in February 2009 to universal acclaim and featured prominently in the 2009 “Best Of” lists, including those of Pitchfork, NME and Rough Trade Shops. They wowed the crowds at ATP, SXSW, Primavera, Roskilde and The Isle Of Wight festivals and toured the US and Europe non-stop, including sold out shows at London’s The Garage and Scala. The band began 2010 with a month-long tour of Japan, New Zealand and Australia, and then took a breath to record this fantastic new single. 'Say No To Love' is a big step forward, combining the Pains' now-trademark youthful energy and infectious song craft with a more deliberate approach to the studio. It just might be their best single yet - a shimmering slice of pure pop just right for the summer. Says the band's Kip Berman: "It's got three chords, a fuzz pedal and lots of feelings. But instead of recording in the basement like we did for our album and both EPs, we recorded in an actual studio (Stratosphere Sound in New York). We tried hard to make it sound, as Peggy would say, 'life affirming' and we're pretty excited about how it turned out." The band go back in the studio to work throughout the summer on their eagerly awaited second album. On the evidence of this single it's sure to be something special. // "Pure indiepop to hold close to your heart." – NME // Last European tour included sold out dates across the UK, Holland, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium - Festival appearances at SXSW, Primavera, Roskilde and ATP, Sold out shows at London Garage and Scala. The band play a short European festival tour this summer including Latitude, a much-anticipated headline slot at Indietracks and a London
