When tribute albums are done well it's always a pleasure sifting through the thrills & spills provided by ecstatic devotees who've built their own careers on a love & understanding of the particular band they're playing homage to. The best example i've heard in a while is The Psychedelic Sounds Of The Sonic Cathedral: A Tribute To Roky Erickson And The 13th Floor Elevators. That title took up a whole fucking line man. Glad it wasn't' drugs or old Roky'd be hoovering up my review as we speak. I don't need to spell out what fun this is, the cover of Rollercoaster by The Black Angels w/ the real Roky on vox at the beginning sends shivers up my spine man - that song is pure voodoo bliss. Funny no-ones attempted 'Step Inside This House' but nevertheless there's 13 fantastically executed tracks of chiming psych garage, fuzzy acid-fried spacerock & rustic psych folk to contend with from some of the cream of the international shoegaze & motorik rock fraternity. The production throughout often attempts to mirror the slightly muffled, drowsy beauty of the originals and is one of the many charming things about this big trashed, euphoric aural love-in. Fabbo!

An all-star tribute to psychedelic legend Roky Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators.
