His Greatest Misses by Robert Wyatt

5...according to our on Thu 03 Jun, 2010.

Well one of our greatest songwriters needs no introduction from a snotty oik like myself. The guy is in a weelchair but can still metaphorically kick most of his fellow post 60's singer songwriters into a cocked hat I feel. It's the whimsical sensitivity, grace & considerable beauty of his songs that win every time. This is a Japanese market only compilation of cherry picked tunes that Domino have "found" and therefore repromoted at a much more affordable price and is thus THE perfect gateway to his mellow English soul, psych-jazz & folk-rock inflected output. For me his work grows on you gradually like a sweet smelling fungus that you could end up wearing as a rather spiffing jacket if it weren't for the fact you cannot wear your fave records. There's a total genius at work here, an elegance, eccentricity & intelligence that is often unsurpassed in this tainted industry & highly infectious for it! His version of 'I'm A Believer' is a treasure & yes, 'Shipbuilding' is on here, albeit much later on. No "frontload with the classics" for this guy. Cos they're ALL classics!! He's also probably one of the only British "pop" pianists whose work I fully admire, long may he rein supreme!!

Super limited to 1000 copies for the UK, this beautifully artworked hardback CD compilation is a rare treat.

•    Currently selling for silly money on eBay, Domino have unearthed a limited quantity of this much sought-after collection of Robert Wyatt’s greatest moments. Previously released only in Japan as a limited edition, this 17 track album is the perfect introduction to the music of Robert Wyatt.
•    Having made available the landmark recordings of Robert Wyatt - ‘Rock Bottom’ (1974), ‘Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard’ (1975), ‘Nothing Can Stop Us’ (1981), ‘Old Rottenhat’ (1985), ‘Dondestan (Revisited)’ (1991 / 1998), ‘Shleep’ (1997), ‘EPs’ (1998), ‘Cuckooland’ (2003), ‘Robert Wyatt & Friends’ (2005) and ‘Comicopera’ (2007), both individually and as a box set - Domino reissue ‘His Greatest Misses’.
•    As Robert himself says, “A thoughtful chap in Japan brought these tunes together as a sort of canter around my back catalogue: a reminder or introduction. I’m grateful to Domino for giving it a run round the block over here. And blimey! My little drawings were done about sixty years ago... how retrospective can you get?”
