Dokkebi Q - Hardcore Cherry Bonbon

Hardcore Cherry Bonbon by Dokkebi Q

Japanese bass punks Dokkebi Q electrifyingly epitomise their homeland's obsession with fast thrills, kaleidoscopic loudness and flat out musical insanity. Named after a mythical Korean beast, Dokkebi Q have unleashed an amazing musical monstrosity with 'Hardcore Cherry Bon Bon', which detonates a headwrecking mixture of deeply fried dubstep, seriously mangled digi-dub and gleefully distorted electronic filth, representing a new breed of lethal Japanese frequency freaks alongside their mate and close ally Goth-trad. Kiki Hitomi's voice is like the bastard offspring of Karen O, Ari Up and her eastern sistren Likkle Mai (Ex Dry & Heavy), whilst the don Gorgonn's harder-faster-louder production mentality challenges Vex'd, Iration Steppas or even Skream for an imaginary worldsoundclash. Yet despite the obvious sonic deviance and lyrical madness at play, what is most impressive about the duo's debut album is just how catchy songs like the title track ‘Hardcore Cherry Bon Bon' or 'Gobbledygook' truly are.

Not content to stew in an uninspiringly grey underground, the East London based pair choose to blow up the borders, turn up the colour, and spike the party, with shockingly infectious melodies and unforgettable choruses. To Tokyo, via Hackney, en route from Saturn, this crazed outergalactic combo have also begun spreading their talent outside Dokkebi Q’s fantastic wonderland, as Kiki HItomi has become a full member of King Midas Sound, guested with Starkey on the Philly beatheadz’ new album, and formed Black Chow with The Bug for releases on Jahtari and Hyperdub. She also worked with The Bug on his new 'Run' 12" on Loefah's Swamp 81 imprint. Her musical co-conspirator Gorgonn has himself now formed Devilman with renowned oriental nuttah DJ Scotch Egg, and played shows with Anti-Pop Consortium, King Cannibal and Bong Ra. Yet together as Dokkebi Q they have summoned up a force of nature in ‘Hardcore Cherry Bon Bon’ that is startling, hilarious, soothing, enveloping and unavoidably attention-grabbing, often all these things in the space of one song. Scorching the earth of the low end sound’s rolling landscape, Dokkebi Q are the addictive musical smartbomb primed to explode the minds of Generation Bass.
