I really like the opening track on this album. It's the first I've heard from Gun Outfit, though the press release tells me that this is their second LP. It's starts out kinda rocking with 'Feeling Good' but soon withdraws into mellower territory. Inspired by the likes of the Byrds but sounding just as much like early Yo La Tengo or Silver Jews due to it's country tinged vocal delivery and kooky melodic phrases, Gun Outfit sound like the past and future all rolled into one. The duel male/female vocals are particularly sweet especially on 'Washed Out' and 'Last Chants' and musically the group are surprisingly varied considering there's only three of 'em. Reverb commonly dominates the mix and gives these tracks and airy, dreamy quality without getting bogged down or spaced out. Really beautiful and totally worth checking out if only for the awesome opening track. I'm feeling good.
Gun Outfit's second LP was recorded at High Command in Olympia, Washington by Captain Trips Ballsington. The clean and raw sounds on this record are a fantasy. The mental frontier of rock music, fifty years later.
Influenced by The Byrds, Horses and Susan Sontag, Gun Outfit slam through and enter their sophomore years of recording and making music as a band.
Honing their craft, ‘Possession Sound’ is sometimes a more mellow listen than their previous efforts, and sometimes more raw in it's delivery entirely. A very exciting progression from a real band in every way.
