What To Say indeed? The new album is a far more muscular & satisfying beast than its predecessor but I feel this single is a bit of a "lamer" compared to some of the delights to be found on the forthcoming 'Say It'. In a kind of negative strategy to the over-hyped Vampire Weekend they've apparently chosen one of the weakest tracks (IMO) as a "leader"! Its a catchy enough, stripped back number that features that infuriatingly affected vocal yelp & some mellow bobbing bass amongst the sketchy afro-flecked guitars, the drums tapping along happily but the whole song suffers from this anemic & somewhat uninspiring climax that has me shaking my head in bewilderment. Not a good advertisement for a relatively impressive sophomore album!! Buy that instead....
• Toronto’s Born Ruffians return with the first single from their captivating new album ‘Say It’. Titled ‘What To Say’, it’s a watertight indie anthem that showcases their unmistakable vocal overlaps as they wind their way around infectious guitar work and even introduce a few new tricks.
• The band will return to UK shores to play two London headline shows and a headline slot at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival.
• Their debut album ‘Red Yellow and Blue’ spawned the anthemic ‘Hummingbird’, which soundtracked two major ads at the time, earned the band two Record Of The Week spots on Radio 1 and was performed by the band in an episode of ‘Skins’ (they were the third ever band to appear after Foals and Crystal Castles).
