The Nights Are Cold by Camera Obscura

So it's Camera Obscura taking on 'The Nights are Cold' by Richard Hawley. Hawley seems to be universally liked, much like Camera Obscura, so i'm sure this one's gonna sell pretty well, regardless of my opinion. C.O. tackle the composition with pure admiration and dedication. They clearly love Hawley's music and do their best to honour the original track best they can. It's a very floaty-light interpretation that will no doubt please both Hawley and C.O. enthusiasts alike. The B-side is a Richard Hawley remix of 'The Sweetest Thing' from last years 'My Maudlin Career'. Again, it's an exercise in restraint and respect for the artist, with some bold strings taking central stage, lifting the track into the indie pop heavens.

• The A side features Camera Obscura covering Richard Hawley’s ‘The Nights Are Cold’ while the AA is Richard’s own remix of their ‘The Sweetest Thing’ (taken from their ‘My Maudlin Career’ album of last year). • Speaking about Richard and this release, Carey Lander from the band said, “I think the first time I heard of Richard Hawley was when our album ‘Biggest Bluest Hifi’ came second to his ‘Late Night Final’ as the Best Album Of The Year in some Spanish awards thing. I borrowed the album from Kenny and listened to it, hoping it would be rubbish so I could dismiss it and proclaim dramatically that we’d been robbed. Unfortunately, it was the record to have most excited me on a first listen ever. It went straight on repeat, I wrote him an email of gushing admiration and phoned Tracyanne to tell her I’d heard something amazing and would bring it round to her house as soon as possible. Tackling a song from a record we love so much was quite daunting but I hope you like our version and enjoy the coupling of it with his remix of us.”
