Fresh from his outing with Will Oldham here's Emmett Kelly (aka Mr. Cairo Gang) with a fine solo four-tracker of hushed, timeless, loose 'n' folky rock that's full of downplayed vocalising, sparse guitar and deliberately understated arrangements which, in combination, make it all the more effective when he very occasionally lets rip. It's a style that'll be very familiar to those who splashed out on his excellent Blackest Rainbow LP but makes for excellent value as a starting point for those curious about what he does. Get in there quick 'cos it's pretty limited, like.
Very limited edition 7" vinyl (300) from Tin Angel Records in conjunction with Empty Cellar Records of San Francisco. The Cairo Gang is Emmett Kelly - a fantastic songwriter from California, who has collaborated, produced, and been part of the band with Will Oldham as well as releasing his own albums under The Cairo Gang name. The new Bonnie Prince Billy record 'The Wonder Show Of The World' (Domino, March 2010) is credited as a collaboration with The Cairo Gang. This new single has four tracks, with the lead track called 'Holy Clover'. Performing with a back up band or solo, Kelly always brings a freshened thrill to the world of quiet rock music. These new jams were recorded in Shelby County, Kentucky with Emmett Kelly and guitar player Chris Rodahaffer, with vocal harmonies and some soaring qualities.
