Coconut/Origami by Hind Ear

5...according to our on Thu 27 May, 2010.

This is one of those records that I couldn't work out who on earth it was by as it doesn't say on the sleeve. So whoever designs record sleeves out there and is reading this - please take note that it's extremely annoying for people who work in record shops. Whinging aside (I am incapable of not whinging) it's a nice cover with a large patterny thing on it, which has loads of ears on there - or maybe pretzels? Someone please put me out of misery! This is an interesting sounding record. It's mixed by Minotaur Shock's David Edwards and his paw prints are all over it. It's got 2 sides to it... a gentle poppyness which reminds of bands like Maps and a much quirkier, playful side with these weird noises kicking about the shop ala Black Dice. The flipside (coconut) is a much more lively afro-beat styled affair with loads of interesting percussion and that. It's a pretty cool little 7" this one!

If you’ve heard their hard-shelled and hymnal coconut, then you’ll know this is a band for all of your ears, not just that tiny, magic one hidden round the back.. Pinglewood / Rising from the debris of distorted guitars and ritualised harmonies this Coconut is quickly strapped to the vicious wheel of a pounding drum machine, it’s pastoral beauty barely allowed to peak above the surface before being smacked into something altogether more muscular. - 20 Jazz Funk Greats / Hind Ear are a technicolour rhythm band from Brighton and London. They use guitars, electronics, voices and drums to fuse hearts to feet and headphones to dancefloors. They are influenced by post-filesharing aesthetic promiscuity, from Black Dice to Black Eyes, Chicago House to contemporary R&B, Fleetwood Mac to Jim O’Rourke.  These songs are about broken percussion and near-death experiences. They were recorded in houses and basements across Brighton, using amplifiers in kitchens, keyboards in toilets and shoes as kick drums, and were mixed by David Edwards of Minotaur Shock in January 2010. AA)  Coconut builds from distorted likembe and deep bass into a rhythmic wall of looped guitar, vocals and jiggy percussion, before stretching out into a pastoral delay freakout. A) Origami progresses through four-to-the-floor kick and organ drone into a taut jam of elastic bass, pitch-shifted vocals and heavy disco, developing along the line that runs from minimalism to dance music. Live, Hind Ear add a muscular presence to the depth and detail of their recordings. Over the past year they have played with like-minded acts including Mi Ami, High Places and Mahjongg, and are preparing for shows in the UK and Europe in the coming months.
