Foals - This Orient/Spanish Sahara (Chad Valley Remix)

This Orient/Spanish Sahara (Chad Valley Remix) by Foals

Foals come back with a pleasant slice of singalong indie. They've definitely had the major label sandpaper treatment. Its kind of like a not completely shit Bloc Party. I can imagine Annie Mac or whoever giving this a spin in the afternoon. It comes on two 7"'s one with a remix by Starkey (same song but electronified hasn't altered the vocals one iota) and on the other Chad Valley who has done a kind of chill wave (hey I'm up with the latest trends me) version which is much more to my taste and alters the song enormously.

OVERVIEW: Perhaps Foals' most concise pop statement to date - a four minute soon-to-be festival favourite - 'This Orient' is no less thoughtful than its predecessors. Soaring but searching, it announces their triumphant return while questioning the very nature of success.

Rooted on a simple arpeggio, the song itself is simple, direct, and emotive. Recorded by Luke Smith (Clor) in Gothenburg, Sweden, the studio was used instrumentally: they designed a human sequencer to automate and elevate the human voice (inspired by Steve Reich), channeling and contorting the sequence through layers of guitars and modular synthesizers.  While such production lends it a contemporary edge, it's the disconcerting spin on an FM-friendly melody that distinguishes the song
