YES YES YES! Not only are us brits being treated to a second Souleyman UK tour in May but we are also blessed with third collection of future Dabke 2020 party jams courtesy of Sublime Frequencies. This new Mark Gergis compiled CD pillages from Omar's rare tape recordings of various live outings. To the uninitiated, Dabke is basically a regional folkloric dance and music of which you can read more about in the press release. All you need to know is that this is some of wildest, most frenzied, upbeat music you're ever likely to hear anywhere. Utilizing cheap synths, samplers, percussion and Omar's unique poetic MCing style they create an ultra modern form of Syrian pop and dance music in 2010. As with Dabke 2020 (released in the summer of 2009) here we are treated to only the finest upbeat tempos and the loopiest keyboard excursions which make for a bewildering listen. Probably the most consistent and lively of the Sublime Frequencies releases so far this comes highly recommended. Totally intense fun. I urge you to check this out.
The master of raw, street-level dabke is back with another fantastic release -- the third Omar Souleyman release on Sublime Frequencies. • The classic party sound of the Jazeera region in Northeast Syria. • A magic combination of Syrian dabke, Iraqi choubi, Turkish and Kurdish rhythms. • Compiled from Omar's super-rare cassettes by Mark Gergis. • Features a full-color 8-page booklet with great photos, a general overview of the lyrics translated into English and liner notes by Mark Gergis. • "Western listeners with a keen sense of audio adventure should have no problem feeling the groove of Souleyman's future folk and should take Dabke 2020 as what it is: a chance to know the music of a people politics has long kept at arm's length." –Pitchfork Sublime Frequencies is honored to present Omar Souleyman's third Western collection on disc. This retrospective features live recordings spanning 15 years of Omar's tireless repertoire, and is rife with frenzied Syrian dabke (a regional folkloric dance and party music), Iraqi choubi and a host of Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish styles, among others -- an amalgamation that exemplifies the musical essence of Northeastern Syria. Culled from cassettes recorded between 1995 and 2009, this collection offers a further rare glimpse into Syrian street-level dabke folk-pop -- a phenomena seldom heard in the West, not previously deemed serious enough for export by the Syrians and rarely, if ever, included on the import agenda of worldwide academic musical committees. Over the years, Souleyman's popularity has risen steadily and the group tirelessly performs concerts throughout Syria and has accepted invitations to perform abroad in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon. In 2006, Sublime Frequencies partnered with Omar to release Highway To Hassake (SF 031CD), the first compilation of his works to be issued in the West. The success of this release and the video for the song "Leh Jani" helped see Souleyman and his group invited for their first Western tour in 2009 alongside label-mates Group Doueh from the Western Sahara. This successful tour quickly elevated Souleyman to the status of an international legend -- and deservedly so. This release coincides with the beginning of Omar's 2010 international tour in May which will take him to the UK, the European mainland, and hopefully the U.S. and Canada. CD features a full-color 8-page booklet with great photos, a general overview of the lyrics translated into English and liner notes by compiler Mark Gergis.
