Our single of the week (16th July 2010)
...according to our Clinton on Fri 16 Jul, 2010.
Its a big ask coming in and being told I'm reviewing the single of the week. What if I don't like it? i'll have to lie like everyone else in the music industry. Luckily there are no such worries with this fabulous single. Its one of those tunes that drifts along seemingly without a verse or a chorus yet is extremely tuneful and has 'instant classic' written all over it. It has a real 60's feel to it recalling both the Thirteenth Floor Elevators at their most insanely catchy and the fabulous forgotten 80's New Zealand bands of Flying Nun and Expressway Records. I may even like the B side more. A great twangy Searchers like guitar riff and a sumptuous melody with hints of the early Pink Floyd singles. Fantastic 60's style mid fi pop that will appeal to fans of obscure 60's psych, the Elephant 6 stable, Guided by Voices, Paisley Underground, The Mantles etc etc etc.
Another total winner from the Agitated stable, and two blasts of wild pop from San Francisco's finest purveyors of said genre The Fresh & Onlys.... its their first UK release, it ties in with UK shows, ATP etc... a New album is due out over the summer on In The Red, 2009 was chock full of killer sides from this lot, 2010 is catching up real fast: Both tracks highlight the bands abilities in creating pop music thats skewed yet perfect. They blend in many sounds / influences, immediate "recommended if you like pointers" include Violent Femmes / 13th Floor Elevators / early 80s British indie-pop / Australian underground singles from the 80s. Both tracks exclusive to this release. You will dance to this, and so will Matt Groening at ATP in May.
