Damn! Thee Oh Sees like to keep busy. It seems like no time at all since i was placing 'Help' on my deck for it's first listen and they've released a whole bunch of stuff between then and new offering 'Warm Slime'. Well it's business as usual for Dwyer's crew...and that's good business. Recorded live by Chris Woodhouse (Mayyors guitarist and producer for The A-Frames, Hospitals, Coachwhips, Erase Errata) to Tascam 388 (i urge you to take a look at this machine, it's amazing and it runs on those mini reel-to-reel tapes you see in the intro to the original Mission Impossible series) in just one day!! The band are on wildly consistent form here, from epic thirteen minute psych-garage marathon 'Warm Slime' to the closing notes of brit-psych-pop workout 'MT Work', Thee Oh Sees prove themselves to be the best of the current crop of garage rock imports. Not only are they totally settled into a comfortable song-writing regime but they've really got their recording technique down-pat too which makes for a lively, excitable and spontaneous listen. As good as 'Help' (probably my favorite record of last year) if not better...didn't think i'd be saying that anytime soon.
The ridiculously prolific Bay Area band Thee Oh Sees areback with another full-length long-player. Warm Slime isguaranteed to please fans of their whacked-out garage /psych / punk jams.Recorded by Sacramento sultan of sound Chris Woodhouse,Warm Slime carries on in the same tradition as thegroup s previous In The Red release, Help, showcasingtheir more electrified and rocking side, in comparison toother recent home-recorded releases. The centerpiece is undoubtedlythe mind-bending title track, which clocks in atnearly 14 minutes and takes up the entirety of the album sfirst side. It s a psychedelic epic of Inna Gadda Da Vida proportions! John Dwyer s guitar playing is at its quadraspazzedbest here, and the vocal interplay with Brigid Dawsongives it a B-52s-at-their-least-cheesy-crossed-with-the-Troggs vibe. The results are stunning. Thee Oh Sees incorporate the oft-referenced Nuggets stuffin a way that feels reverential. With grinding guitars andbah-bah-bah vocals, but with the punk and new-wave elementsalso at play, they don t feel trite or plagiarized. Thisis like meat and potatoes prepared by a master chef totallyfamiliar but utterly delicious.
