Ruined Parabola by Chora

4...according to our on Thu 08 Apr, 2010.

Not heard Chora before though I'm familiar the Sheffield free noise and improv scene they are associated with. Predominantly a duo of Ben Morris and Rob Lye they have been known to supplement their line-up with various collaborators including Pascal Nichols, Patrick Farmer, Kelly Jones and members of Helhesten & The Hunter Gracchus. 'Ruined Parabola' sees them depart from their earlier, electronic based compositions to embrace the Vibracathedral Orchestra model, utilizing live instruments and pedal manipulation. This is powerful psychedelic drone created with an emphasis on minimalism and intensity. Vocal sweeps and mutant brass play host to lingering drone-athons and found-sound manipulation that takes the listener on a kaleidoscopic journey through the confines of the mind. Totally mind bending improv at it's best.

"Ruined Parabola" is the second vinyl offering by London's Chora, but first with all new material...In addition to Ben Morris and Robert Lye is respected solo musician and engineer Ben Nash and emerging collaborator/session/solo musician Karl Brummer. With 3 tracks recorded at their space in Camberwell, and a 4th track marking a return to their old space in Sheffield, 'The Furniture Makers', recorded just before jumping onto a train to play their spot at the Rowf fstival in Manchester.

Ruined Parabola sees Chora playing with the brighter elements of their palette, in a pointillist haze of clattering percussion, ecstatic reeds, bodily yelps and scraping strings which lift in a joyous racket, carrying a trace of the ending summer when they began playing as a 4 piece.
