The Fall - Your Future Our Clutter

Ever since I read this was being recorded, I've been itching to hear it and when it got played for the first time, both Brett and I were particularly impressed. They're in fine form here with a solid production sound and Smith, well just being himself I guess. Opener 'O.F.Y.C Showcase' sets the mood, with its upbeat rhythms and infectious guitar. There is a fantastic version of the 'Bury Pts. 1+3' single that begins with the track sounding like its being played on a badly tuned radio. It's a cracking track and probably an obvious choice for the single with its searing guitar, jaunty bassline. I particularly like 'Cowboy George' which has a sort of Spaghetti western crossed with The Shadows doing rockabilly. Smith does his weird growly vocal on here too which is always entertaining. I could waffle on forever about how tight the musicianship is blah blah blah, It's a new Fall album just get your mitts on it and enjoy!

Things get off to an excellent start as the band power through the first two sides like an inter-city train; this album does boast excellent production throughout, but still remains resolutely the Fall, and it’s good to note that the line-up remains unchanged since “Imperial Wax Solvent” (2008).

Best title by far is ‘Mexican Wax Solvent’, and it’s interesting to note how Smith keeps one step ahead by plugging the next song via the lyrics of the previous song; at one point I had to check that it really was ‘Hot Cake’ playing and not ‘Slippy Floor’. Incidentally I do like all the tape snatches at the end of ‘Y.F.O.C/Slippy Floor’!

Sides three and four are taken at a less frantic approach, ‘Chino’ is dark and brooding, whilst the first of two extra vinyl tracks, ‘986 Generator’ sounds like an elephant stomping round the living room.

The opening of ‘Weather Report 2’, sounds like an early New Order backing track, whilst the second vinyl exclusive cut, “Get A Summer Song Goin’” is classic Fall in every sense.

“Cowboy George” sounds like the Fall jamming with the Ramrods (makers of “Riders In The Sky”) and closes what I feel is a satisfying Fall album, if not a full-on classic set.
