Magic Lantern are total heads. yeah dude. Everyone at the moment seems to be going through some mad druggy Woodstock revival. I don't quite know what to do about it all..... I mean, this album is called Platoon, has a picture that could be an aerial view of Saigon on the sleeve & the opening choon consists of big massive acid-y wah-wah licks splurged all over this fucking amazing, dirty lo-fi tripped-out funk jam. Possibly like Hendrix beating up Sly Stone in a compost bin. You can tell that Sun Araw boy is messed up in this. Definitely displays a massive dopey head-nod of respect towards the hazy arse-end of the Flower Power season when everyone had done too many blotters in the sun & the music got more rocking & demented. Thing is, this album actually comes across like a prized lost classic from that period, except more weird & twisted, fucked-up and sludgy - like a miscreant hauntological record for your new girlfriends crazed hippy dad who lives in Avesbury and can't remember anything after the IOW festival. On Not Not Fun, the double negative starting to be very apt now, for this is a very fun disc
Sadly, this new album from Magic Lantern will be their last, lets savour it: Here it comes. Energetic moon-cone wipeouts, thigh-quaking sweatfests, its all there.Featuring Cameron Stallone (Sun Araw), and definitely orbiting in the same trajectory as the likes of Loop, Spacemen 3, Hawkwind, Wooden Shjips, the Heads, Can, Popul Vuh, Amon Duul II, but with its own loose jointed Cali-vibe, powering through the aural mind expansion. highly recommended!!
