I was convinced we reviewed this last time it came in but it looks like we didn't. Maybe we lost the review. We do things like that sometimes.... It was originally released on Invada (Geoff 'Portishead' Barrow's label) and now Domino offshoot Double Six have picked it up to hopefully give it a bit more coverage. It's an album that deserves more coverage as well. People need to hear this record. It's a goodie! They went under the name of Malaki before so for some reason they've changed their name? Is that a Children of the Corn thing? Musically it's all over the shop.... it's essentially psychedelic pop laden with samples which harks bark to the 60's and 70's It's the songs that carry this album though. They're astonishingly good as they stick in your head after one listen. Snowflake is a great slab of 70's sounding rock.... The influences on the album are varied which makes it an interesting album and also it's gonna appeal to a wide variety of people given the mixture of genres here. You should check out some of the sound samples on the site. They'll do it way more justice than anything I could ever write.Initially released in 2009 on Portishead’s Geoff Barrow’s Invada label (under the band’s old name Malakai), the thirteen track album will be preceded by the band’s debut radio single for Double Six, ‘Snowflake’, featuring remixes from Geoff Barrow himself, as well as a club banger from Herve.
The duo head out to SXSW and New York for a jam- packed run of dates, where things just keep heating up for them across the board at radio, press and online. In the UK, their supporters include Zane Lowe at Radio 1, Clash and Stool Pigeon.
Available on CD and limited edition LP (200 copies).
“Malachai are into everyone from Public Image Ltd to Tricky; from Morricone to UNKLE; and from Bushkiller to Boards Of Canada - which is possibly why everyone from Annie Mac to Gilles Peterson are into Malachai” – The Guardian, “Stand-alone Bristol sensation” – Mojo.
