MGMT - Congratulations

Congratulations by MGMT

4...according to our on Thu 08 Apr, 2010.

Lauded as the true heirs to Flaming Lips' majestic widescreen psychedelic pop throne (I'd like to see what that physically manifested itself as, can someone do me a drawing?), these guys put me off by dressing like berks and having some woeful R1 DJ voicing adverts for their last "opus" late at night whilst I was trying to watch something of importance. I didn't "get" it. Now the second full lengther (I love saying that - I am turning into Phil) is here with superb Anthony Ausgang art (probably intended as a ruse to get our friend Maria to buy their album and lure her away from the curse of the BJM) I don't know what to say about this on first listen but it is really great fun. Warm, euphoric, eccentric bubbly indie pop with a genuinely intriguing psych twist, great melodies. I'm reminded of The Coral one minute, Sparks another, Polyphonic Spree, Arcade Fire, The Cars & Tom Vek......but they seem to have their own thing going on. In the diluted, murky river that is modern "indie", these guys are blatantly irrepressible talents brandishing big buckets of musical fun to chuck in your miserable, downtrodden face. The packaging is totally cool as well, you get a free mystical coin to confuse bus drivers with!

The eagerly anticipated new x9 trk album from MGMT - Ltd double gatefold vinyl format, standard Cd plus Ltd deluxe Cd with a scratch off cover, custom metal coin & 32 page colour booklet. Follow up to 2008's debut "Oracular Spectacular" which has sold almost 500k units!

Just a quick reply to Brian's review. Well I haven't heard the album yet, but I am chuffed to see Anthony Ausgang's artwork being given mainstream exposure. Although funnily enough I actually bought MGMT's last album on the strength of its exotically flavoured sleeve! Ausgang has done fab sleeves for the Warlocks, the Boredoms and many of Sonic Boom's projects, amongst others. He's done paintings for members of Queens of the Stone Age. And he loves cats. Respect!Maria
