Benga - Phaze: One

Time for The Bengalator. I can't say I've ever been a huge fan and I was fully prepared for this to be relatively uninspired and slightly dated given how things have moved on in Dubstepland since his heyday of a few years ago but I'm actually not minding it. First tune 'Baltimore Clap' pays tribute to the club scene over there with a minimal, yet quite addictive beat, which I assume must be where the 'clap' mentioned in the title comes from.. Although I guess it's always possible that he's been over there and come back with an unwanted gift. The other tracks all follow quite a similar pattern: a few seconds of ravey/techno/jack track/dubstep/Mujava mashup fun repeated ad infinitum. The sound is weird though, I'm gonna feel like a right old man here saying this but there's something about the harsh digitality that I'm finding incredibly wearying to listen to.. These'd definitely go down really well in a club environment but I can't imagine them doing much for home listeners at all. But then again that's probably not really the point, is it?

* From the writer of the critically acclaimed album ‘Diary of an Afro Warrior’ and seminal cross-genre hit ‘Night', ‘Phaze One’ is the first of a brand new series of Benga EPs.

* Worldwide headline DJ, Benga is again booked for every major festival from Glastonbury and Global Gathering to Melt and Dour.

* Benga’s double-pack arrives fully charged with six, stand-out-in-the-mix, jump-off’s carved for peak-time raving. This is the first in a line of double-pack releases, his own equivalent to the highly successful ‘Skreamizm’ series from Skream. The collector series will continue Phaze Two, Phaze Three and so forth until the release of his second album.

* ‘Baltimore Clap’[A] a pulsing, sweating homage to Bmore house. Arranged to impact like a stripped down, skeletal riddim which reveals it’s nuance and many layers only once the listener is spellbound to a state of jacking hedonism by the relentless claps. Watch out for the music video...

* Those who’ve caught any of Benga’s recent sets will be pleased to hear ‘eyeTunes ‘and ‘Mini Moto Cross’ made it to Phaze One. The two have been favourite mainstays in his sets and also been beaten around the world by Toddla T, Plastician and Skream and are highly requested by listeners of leading underground music station Rinse FM.

* With whispers circulating about the follow up to ‘Diary Of An Afro Warrior’ as well as the Magnetic man LP [Benga, Skream, Artwork] both rumoured to drop this year. Phaze One is the pound of flesh the people demanded whilst they wait.

* TRACKLIST: A. Baltimore Clap B. eyeTunes B2. Mini Moto Cross C. 808 D1. Your Band (Descending) D2. Rock Music
