Pumps by Growing

5...according to our on Thu 01 Apr, 2010.

'Pumps!' is Growing's most 'Pumping' release to date, taking a cue from their recent amazing live performances the trio have adopted the full-on use of drum machines, creating a solid, consistent backdrop for their expansive melodic gibber-musings. It has the feel of 'Vision Swim' but with a hitherto unheard sexiness not traditionally associate with the group (maybe the influence of Vice perhaps??). If this is Growing's attempt at a consistent musical statement i believe they are on to something here as every tune is RAD. They've successfully taken the tranquil guitar/synth manipulation of their previous outings and twisted it into something you can almost dance too! Ace! Not that far removed from Black Dice and that sort of thing...but better. Can't wait to get this baby home. Ow!

OVERVIEW:

The 8th album from Brooklyn, NY's Growing is another top-shelf freakout. Drum machines create dense tribal rhythms and form the bedrock for the loneliest dance floor in the universe. Vocal samples swoop in and out like starlings over effects laden synths and guitar. Growing has given birth to a magical creation with PUMPS - it's the audio equivalent of coming out of an anesthetic haze with a squirming pile of joy wrapped safely in your eardrums.
