The Pipettes - Stop The Music

Stop The Music by The Pipettes

What has happened? I made Brett cry earlier on when I shook the new Pipettes single in his face. Perhaps a cruel gesture as he is a big fan of their initial output (and Rose McDougall with her delicious baking products) but now they've returned as some kind of teeth gratingly bad europap duo without any of their initial charm or flair. Or members. Or songs. This one is called 'Stop The Music' (just begging for a cutting review, obviously) and sounds marginally less tedious than the last Goldfrapp single. The B-side 'So I'll Say Goodbye' is even fucking WORSE not to mention the remixes. Justus Kohnke from Kompakt cannot bolster the credibility of this embarrassing mess. One for the nippers methinks......

The Pipettes were never your typical pop band and now they’re back to prove it. They’ve put the polka dot dresses on ice, brought the boys out of the shadows and had 1 change in the girl department too. Their musical roots of sculpted, self-confessed, unabashed pop remain intact, but with a fresh new take. ‘Stop The Music’ is the first single to be taken from up their upcoming second album, ‘Earth Vs The Pipettes’. A gleaming disco ballad, it continues the themes of their debut but the girls who once doted on the harmonies of The Ronettes now play out their relationships to the beat of the discotheque. Studio 54, Larry Levan and Philly soul influence the beat and strings, frustration and sadness make the melody, creating a slab of dramatic pop with a classic chorus hook that never ages. From Thelma Houston’s ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ to Robyn and Kleerup’s ‘With Every Heartbeat’, sadness and a fat beat always make for the best pop. Released on the Fortuna POP! label responsible for last year’s indie smash The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart it comes on limited edition red vinyl 7” and as a five song CDEP which includes a remix by one of The Pipettes favourite artists, Justus Köhncke of Kompakt. In their first incarnation, donning polka dot dresses and referencing the girl groups of the late fifties in the heyday of skinny tie indie music, The Pipettes had remarkable success. A top ten album in Japan where the single 'Pull Shapes' was only kept off the number one spot by J-Lo, top ten radio positions all across Europe, 2 Top Forty hits in the UK and a Top Ten in the US billboard indies. They played on the main stages at Reading and Glastonbury, blazed a British trail across SXSW, conquered the world & sold a ton of records. Since then they’ve been working on their new album with legendary Martin Rushent (The Stranglers, Shirley Bassey, Human League’s ‘Dare’
