...according to our Dave on Thu 01 Apr, 2010.
I usually balk at the idea of actors making music. From Dogstar to Billy Bob Thornton, the idea of these thesps commiting songs to tape fills me with dread (Apart from Russell Crowe, whose band 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts are amazing..and he used to call himself Russ Le Rock!). Now actress Zooey Deschanel enters the fold with some bittersweet pop...and its a relief to say she does a pretty good job. Her voice sounds captivating. The production duties are capably held by M.Ward. Its one of those albums where every song sounds disarmingly familiar. There's an art to writing songs like this and Ms Deschanel, with her voice as a paintbrush, is a capable artist. A strong album.• She & Him (M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel), release ‘Volume Two’ via Double Six.
• The album is the highly anticipated follow up to the duo’s critically acclaimed debut ‘Volume One’, released in 2008, making good on ‘Volume One’s’ musical promise and then some. It’s bigger, bolder and more beautiful than its predecessor; the vocal arrangements, courtesy of Zooey, are dynamic, and show our singing heroine expanding her range in gorgeous ways, while the string arrangements, courtesy of M., are perfectly placed musical moments. ‘Volume Two’ shimmers from start to finish.
• Last year saw Zooey contributed vocals to Jenny Lewis’ album, ‘Acid Tongue’, and then dazzled movie goers in this summer’s hit film ‘500 Days of Summer’ (She & Him actually covered a pivotal song in the film – The Smiths’ ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ – for the soundtrack). Also busy, M. Ward released his fifth lauded solo album, ‘Hold Time’, and collaborated with friends Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Jim James under the moniker Monsters Of Folk.
• The duo recently did a hugely successful European promo trip, and return for the UK and European tour, with them playing ATP in the UK as well as other live dates.
• ‘Volume Two’ is released on special digi-pack CD and vinyl with download codes for the full album.
