Dum Dum Girls - I Will Be

I Will Be by Dum Dum Girls

4...according to our on Thu 25 Mar, 2010.

This is a collection of rattling, slightly lo-fi indie anthems built from a kaputting drum machine, lolloping female (& occasionally male) vocals plus hollowed-out guitar that are produced in such a way that the songs become quite infectious in their poppy simplicity. I initially disliked the single because I found the chorus a bit too derivative of the C86/Twee pop scene, like some really annoying pastiche. In the context of the album it works fine and i've quite got over my negative feelings. There's some brilliantly catchy indie "classics" in the can here. It really is 1987 again. Or '77. Or '67 even!! If you find the melodies a bit familiar, I wouldn't worry too much. Nothing is new, nothing is sacred....what's the point in fussing so much? Nothing bands like Raveonettes haven't made a career out of, if it's done well.......

· Having previously released an EP on Captured
Tracks, a 7” on Hozac and a CD EP on Zoo
Music, Dum Dum Girls churn out blissful pop
that falls somewhere between The Ramones
and The Ronettes.
· Their debut album ‘I Will Be’ was recorded at
home by Dee Dee and mixed with the help of
Richard Gottehrer (Strangeloves, Voidoids,
Blondie, The Go-Gos, The Raveonettes).
· A decidedly medium-fi record, at just under thirty
minutes and with eleven songs, it’s a consise
tribute to love, fun and the classic pop
form of the ‘60s girl groups and early punk
rockers.
