Oooh yeah we're among royalty here with Ambarchi on guitar (no surprises there) Jim O'Rourke tinkling away on the piano and Haino putting them to multi-tasking shame, on voice, flute, drum machines and electronics. As with almost every collaboration I've heard with Haino (except the brilliant Install festival set with Tony Conrad) the players tend to be somewhat shy and he usually dominates proceedings. I guess that's probably the case for the greater part here although Ambarchi's hanging tones and drones do the business. Haino gets into his angelic singing mode and it's ultra powerful. He hits them top notes like his nuts are in a vice. Generally it's in the weird zone and things pick up in intensity towards the end with the percussion and electronics stuff, then it gets wonderfully dark and nightmarish with Haino sounding possessed. Recorded live at The Playhouse performing arts centre in Japan January 2009. Recommended.* Stunning document of the debut meeting of this international trio. Recorded live at the Playhouse, Kitakyushu, Japan in January 2009, Tima Formosa retains a mysteriously alien atmosphere throughout it's 3 lengthy explorations with Ambarchi's mesmerising textures and signature, deep guitar tones beautifully merging with O'Rourke's Tudor-esque piano-feedback interjections. Haino provides the icing on the cake via his melancholic, higher consciousness choral vocals and bewildering electronics.
