Pretty Excited about this new High Places LP. Their split 12" with Soft Circle on PPM was super sweet so my expectations are high for this release. High Places are Mary Pearson and Rob Barber of Brooklyn, NY who've recently relocated to sunnier of climes of Los Angeles. What is immediately apparent on listening to '...vs Mankind' is that the sun has had a dramatic effect on the group's song writing skills which seems much more focused than on previous outings. Barber's programming and sound compositions are as bouncy and charming as ever yet it's Pearson's vocals that appear to have matured the most, her voice both commanding and breezy. I can even hear some obvious attempts at catchy chorus's which are mint. High Places music relies a lot on atmosphere and dynamics so it's no surprise to find a big dub and reggae influence but i can also hear elements of Afro and tropicalia as well as semi-hypnagogic moments and plenty of spaced out jams, 'The Most Beautiful Name' being a memorable example. These two don't stand a chance against Mankind mind...Mick Foley would make mince meat of these two indie fops. Comes in an aquatic themed, algi covered sleeve design...ace.“Barber and Pearson distil their knowledge and experimentation into something which
sounds like the raw essence of a musical personality” – The Wire.
‘High Places vs. Mankind’ is the second fulllength
album from Mary Pearson and Rob
Barber, aka High Places.
Formed as a Brooklyn duo in 2006, High Places
have since relocated to Los Angeles, whose
warmer temps and mountain vistas better fit the
warmth of High Places’ music and personalities.
But relocation was but a small part of what’s
been a dynamic few years for the two.
The CD version of ‘High Places vs. Mankind’
comes packaged in a high gloss 4 panel
mini-LP style package with double sided
art card insert.
The LP version is limited to 1000 copies
and is packaged in a high gloss gatefold
jacket with inner sleeve and free MP3
