I went to see Why? the other week. I was amazed at how many people were there and how brimming with enthusiasm they were. Brilliant. I had missed the support act Josiah Wolf. He is the brother of Yoni Wolf, the animal-from-the-muppets like drummer whose hair veers from a neat fuzz to full on wild afro mode depending on the time of year. Here is his debut solo lp entitled 'Jet Lag'. Its a sterling first effort. The Wolf DNA has definitely been passed down though Josiah's mode is much more mellow and folky rather than the frantic and quirky. On first listen i wondered if it was a little wishy washy but on second play the melodies are coming through strong and you can see why he hasn't overdone it on the dynamics and kept the songs simple and full of space. Comparisons would be the obvious - the folkier side of Why? and Fog and the less obvious Mountain Goats, Radar Brothers, Silver Jews. On Anticon.Solo debut from WHY? drummer, Josiah Wolf
Mixed by younger brother Yoni Wolf (WHY?, cLOUDDEAD)
On his debut album, WHY? multi-instrumentalist Josiah Wolf offers up a rare solo work with true legs of its own. His voice deep and straight at times and impossibly fragile at others, Wolf deals both in visual snapshots that illustrate the wistfulness of a mundane moment, and canny excavations of those poignancies that lie beneath the surface: tough triumphs, tougher truths, and outright failures.
Wolf’s lean poems are set to an autumnal mix of warm folk and easy psychedeliplayed out (by Wolf alone) on guitar, vibes, kalimba, Hammond organ, bells, bass and drums to name a few. The end result is a sort of chamber pop minus the showy sweeps virtuosity without the virtuoso – making Jet Lag as impressive in its subtleexecution as it is a timeless, heartfelt listen.
