Our single of the week (1st April 2010)
...according to our Ant on Thu 01 Apr, 2010.
I'm partial to Moon Duo... If you don't already know then this is Ripley Jonson from Wooden Shjips on guitar/vocals and Sanae Yamada on keyboards. I dig their authentic old analogue sound. Good and grubby sounding gear. 'Catch As Catch Can' is pretty driving with its drum machine rhythm and fuzzed up guitar. The vocals are pretty indecipherable as usual which is always good. It's a catchy tune this one... The flipside is a cover of The Scientists 'Set It On Fire' track from 1991, I'm not familiar with the original I must confess but I'm really diggin the riff here, a scorcher of a track. They've totally nailed a krautrock inspired garage rock sound and it's showcased really well on this single. Loop and Suicide comparisons are often made so who am I not to comply, as their influence is reasonably obvious. The usual quality from these guys... Limited edition on Agitated Records.
Here is a debut release and it's a two track stinger from Moon Duo: the a side is blistering original, and the b-side is a take on the Scientists' classic speaker burner "Set It On Fire". Moon Duo latest album on Woodsist is whipping up a storm, they are touring in the summer (there will be other records out by then for sure too): They comprise Erik Johnson (Wooden Shjips) on guitars and vocals and Sanae Yamada on keyboards: they deal in a really heavy fuzzed out and krautrock driven garage sound, reference points could easily pull in some of the great ala Suicide / Loop and some of the obscure ala Red Eye / Black Eye Records canon and it has the right sound of now..highly recommended. 1000 only.
