Lethargy & Repercussion by Ken Camden

5...according to our on Thu 08 Apr, 2010.

Kranky go Kosmische. Chicago native Ken is unfortunately not some chirpy perma-tanned car wash owner from the North London borough but a supremely talented guitarist who often (somehow) makes his chosen instrument sound like old modular synthesizers. The first song here could have fallen straight off 'Phaedra' by Tangerine Dream as it A/ sounds really old and B/ is fucking marvelous. He's obviously been studying minimal composition real hard for ages as this is one of the most natural sounding tributes to the outer reaches of 70's minimalism i've heard. I really can't believe he's getting all this bizarre otherworldly sound ricocheting from his guitar, this album is wonderfully varied & sounds totally suited to its vinyl only format. I especially love the track 'Raagini Robot'. It sounds like Autechre remixing a track off that Gareth Davis & Steven R. Smith 'Westering' album! Thoroughly engaging......AND it doesn't sound like a load of turnips in a washing machine

* VINYL ONLY: NO COMPACT DISC RELEASE

* Ken Camden plays guitar. While those four words might imply something extremely limiting, Ken's playing and execution are anything but. His work seamlessly melds elements of modern composition, kosmische musik, eastern modal themes and academic electronic works; in other words, a good amount of the things we love here at Kranky.

* All of the pieces were recorded in real time with no overdubs, with the exception of Jupiter which was designed and recorded as a duet for two guitars. While this process may not result in the technical perfection that many strive for, it leaves in the idiosyncrasies that give sound recordings their life and their soul, that make them unique to the individual and the moment. Each final mix was chosen from multiple versions of each composition for the qualities inherent in the specific selected take.

* What results are six heady atmospheres perfect for headphones and a deep recline into an enveloping chair.

* Yet another entry in the long list of debut releases on kranky by unsung and unknown artists. Ken Camden lives and works in Chicago. He also plays in the Implodes sound quartet.

* FOR FANS OF: TIM HECKER. LOSCIL, GAS, MAIN.

* TRACKLIST: 01. Birthday 02. Raagini Robot 03. In Your Ears 04. Raga 05. New Space 06. Jupiter
